For the past 100 years, Arizona State University’s Black students, faculty, staff and alumni have used their education to break down barriers to social progress in their communities, improve lives and pave the way for the next generation.
We honor early graduates like Calvin Goode, ’49 BS in business administration, ’72 MA in education, who attended a segregated high school in the Valley and became the second African American elected to the Phoenix City Council, where he fought for equity and justice. Or Josephine Pete, ’60 BA, ’66 MA, ’70 EdS in education, the first woman to serve as principal of South Mountain High School.
They paved the way for a new generation of leaders like Vada Manager, ’83 BS in political science, a global business strategist who has held leadership positions at Nike and Levi-Strauss. Or Ginger Spencer, ’96 BA in Spanish, deputy city manager for the City of Phoenix, and Sian Proctor, ’98 MS in geology, PhD in science education, the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft.
Today, a new generation of Black scholars is pursuing their educational aspirations at ASU. A new generation of faculty is sharing scholarship, discoveries and accomplishments. We’d like to share ways that supporters like you can support their success. With your support, the next generation of Black leaders can continue the legacy of achievement at ASU.
