Carl Newman was a longtime aviation industry leader, mentor and friend to many in the Phoenix community. This scholarship is named in his honor to recognize his decades of service to the City of Phoenix Aviation Department. Newman joined the Aviation Department in 1980 as an Operations Administrative Assistant. Over the years he held many roles in the Aviation Department, eventually rising to the role of Assistant Aviation Director. Throughout his career, Newman held several other leadership roles at airports throughout the country, and in his later years served as Aviation Director for the Glendale Municipal Airport in Glendale, Arizona. Newman was known for being a generous mentor and champion of leadership development programs for aviation employees. His dedication, care and advocacy will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

  • More students succeed. ASU ranks #1 among the state’s public universities for its 86% first-year retention rate thanks in part to donor-funded student success initiatives.
  • Important initiatives continue. More than $320 million in new gifts and commitments support ongoing initiatives at ASU.
  • The spirit of generosity abounds. In the past year, more than 100,000 individual, corporate and foundation donors stepped forward to help the ASU community.
